Consciousness is generally defined as 'being in a state of being awake' or 'being aware of one's present state and surroundings'.

Consciousness is a state in which brain activity is active and stimuli to the five senses can be perceived. Consciousness' refers to a state in which it is possible to detect stimuli in the brain and show a clear response to them.

In contrast, unconsciousness (subconsciousness) is a state in which stimuli to the five senses cannot be felt in the brain and stimuli are not recognised. It is a state in which the response to stimuli is partial.

Where is human consciousness located?

Consciousness is not thought to be born in the cerebral cortex, but is generated in the upper brain stem. Consciousness is essentially emotional and an extension of homeostasis. Later, with the development of the cortex, learning mechanisms from experience, or cognitive consciousness, first appear.

In this sense, a newborn baby is 100% unconscious.

What is the difference between consciousness and the mind?

The mind is a function of mental activity processes and cognition, whereas consciousness is something that exists.
